Dharmawangsa, Small Location with Huge Satisfaction

When we think about this Dharmawangsa, we think of the famous landmark – the great white mosque called “Al-Azhar” – as well as the residential area. But lately, people are heading to this area because it offers more and more lifestyle satisfaction. Dharmawangsa is, in terms of area, the smallest compared to other recommended places for expatriates to live in. However, Dharmawangsa can still provide maximum happiness in all aspects, as we describe below.

Location, Location, Location

This area is all about location. A strategic area in South Jakarta which is close to Sudirman and Thamrin where all the skyscrapers, premium-class shopping centres and Michelin star restaurants are located. It takes normally fifteen minutes from Dharmawangsa to these places. How about the traffic jam? Well, we usually always expect traffic in Jakarta, but in Dharmawangsa the streets are relatively smooth on weekdays. The streets are big, and the surrounding environment resembles that of a complex. Because of these, Dharmawangsa has its own unique charm. And it works!

More Secure Place

We can’t just say that there are huge houses or buildings in Dharmawangsa. That’s very common, right? Especially if we talk about recommended places for expats to live in. However, Dharmawangsa also has more security personnel because the area is inhabited by some state officials and ambassadors too. The security feels more safe and secure. Often when passing this area, there are convoy escorted by the police, or the road is being temporarily blocked because an event is being held in one of the houses. You also often see people wearing official clothes or Batik walk out of buildings and entering red-plated cars.

Place for Both Chill and Party

This is what distinguish Dharmawangsa from Kebayoran Baru. Yes, we know that Dharmawangsa is in Kebayoran Baru as well, both are elite areas, and yes, there are many magnificent houses in both. But it feels like all the cafes and party places are gathered here! If we break it down, you can say that cafes and restaurants are placed in Dharmawangsa. From luxurious, cosy cafés to outdoor or semi-outdoor cafés, they have it all - and all of them are Instagrammable. Meanwhile, the place to hang out and partying are in Senopati, four kilometres from Dharmawangsa. This is the home base of party people, period. People of Jakarta even call it “Senoparty”. The atmosphere is vibrant and lively, truly a contender to Kemang – another area to party in. Therefore, it is unavoidable that this area will always be crowded every weekend.

Little Korea

We think that this is uniqueness is found only in Dharmawangsa – no other recommended places for expats have this. Dharmawangsa is already known as an area with many expatriates from Korea. This is because the Korean expats can get many things they need in Dharmawangsa. Various recommendation websites also describe Dharmawangsa as a Korean culinary paradise with many Korean restaurants serving authentic menus such as Bibimbap, Gimbap, Japchae, and many more. Secondly, Korean expats are also pampered by the presence of several Korean minimarkets. They can get many homeland brand necessities and food products, which coincidentally also attracts local people due to the recent K-wave. Being able to shop while eating together, no wonder that Korean expatriates label Dharmawangsa as ‘The Korea Town”.
